There are few things we can be as proud of in Kaposvár as when a local company comes up with a development that helps the whole country. Locals are probably already familiar with the name Vatner Kft., which has now made an exceptional contribution to the field of mobile diagnostic units: Hungary’s first MOBIL MR and MOBIL CT devices, designed and operated by them, are built into specially designed trucks and travel to hospitals.
Why is this such a big deal? When an institution’s MR or CT equipment breaks down or needs to be replaced, patient care cannot be interrupted. In such cases, a mobile unit rolls into the hospitals and performs full-fledged examinations with the same accuracy as stationary devices. This way, no patient is left without diagnostic testing. Drawing on its previous experience—in 2014, Vatner Kft. was the only company in Hungary to design and build the country’s first mobile screening station equipped with a CT scanner—the company has made another special development in the field of imaging diagnostics in the form of the MOBIL MR truck. The MR truck had to be designed and built from scratch, resulting in a 14-meter-long, 4-meter-high, 32-ton superstructure housing a state-of-the-art Siemens MAGNETOM Viato.Mobile 1.5 Tesla MRI.
The interior looks exactly like an MRI machine in a hospital, and the quality of the examinations is identical to that of institutional equipment. The huge truck can be put to work anywhere – at hospitals, clinics, or even screening stations.
MOBIL CT felt that a new one needed to be built to meet today’s challenges and modern technologies, and so the country’s most modern MOBIL CT was born at the Hidegkuti Workshop in Tatabánya. In the joint project between Vatner and Hidegkuti, the construction of the articulated truck was an engineering feat: for radiation protection, the examination room was covered with 1.5 mm thick lead plates from floor to ceiling, and the side walls of the truck can be extended during deployment, making the interior comfortable.
The MOBIL CT has everything needed for hospital diagnostics, and the vehicle can perform hospital-level examinations anywhere in a matter of moments, so patients do not have to go to another institution if the CT scanner is unavailable at their current location. It is no coincidence that there is enormous interest in MR and CT trucks; today, several such mobile units are working simultaneously in the Vatner fleet in different parts of the country. In Veszprém, for example, the MOBIL MR was put into operation at the Csolnoky Ferenc Hospital while the old equipment is being replaced with more modern equipment, while in Kecskemét another MOBIL MR is assisting with hospital care, and in the near future, they are scheduled to be put into service in Baja and Szekszárd.
All this is part of the National Hospital Directorate’s nationwide diagnostic modernization program, which will see new CT and MRI equipment worth HUF 22.6 billion arrive in the Hungarian healthcare system. The mobile units will ensure that there are no disruptions to patient care during the upgrades.
MOBIL MR and CT are a technological curiosity, an engineering feat, and a social responsibility all at once. Vatner Kft. is not only enhancing Kaposvár’s reputation, but also providing real help to Hungarian people every day by bringing the latest diagnostic technology to where it is most needed.
